If the Select Location screen does not display the drive letter of the drive/device you want to search, click My drive is not listed. The window will expand and two links will display - Refresh drive list and Select a physical device to search.
The first step is to check that the drive/device is properly connected and configured.
Note: Most portable devices are bundled with drivers that provide this type of connection between the device and Windows.
Verify that the device is connected to your computer and verify that its power supply is on.
Tip: The Windows Device Manager provides information about how the hardware on your computer is installed and configured. You can update the device drivers for hardware installed on your computer, modify hardware settings, and troubleshoot problems.
To open Device Manager: From the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System to open the System Properties window. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. For information about using Device Manager, click Help on the menu bar.
Once you have verified your connections, click Refresh drive list. The Select Location screen will re-display any newly detected drives and devices.
If you:
See the drive letter, select it and click Next to go to the next screen of the wizard.
Do not see the drive letter, follow Step 2 below.
If after following Step 1 you still do not see the drive letter, it may not be accessible due to a lost or damaged partition. Search and Recover can still run a search of the actual physical device.
Note: Searching a physical device significantly increases search time. This type of search should only be run if the drive letter is not accessible.
Click Select a physical device to search. An informational message will display; click OK.
The Select Location screen will display a list of physical drives and devices using the manufacturer's ID/description.
Select the applicable drive or device and click Next to go to the next screen of the wizard.
To return the Select Location screen to displaying drive letters, click Select a drive letter to search.
