iolo technologies’ New Packaging

#1 PC tune-up maker’s new environmentally friendly packaging significantly reduces weight and increases shipment volume

LOS ANGELES, CA – August 19, 2009 – iolo technologies, recently recognized as the fastest-growing U.S. company by American Business Awards, initiated new environmentally friendly efforts by offering its award-winning products, including System Mechanic, the world’s #1 best-selling PC tune-up software, in lighter packages. The new packages will be immediately available in Wal-Mart store locations across the country.

iolo’s product packaging has used soy-based inks and a percentage of recycled cardboard inserts for years. After closely working with its production partners, however, the company was able to further minimize the environmental impact of the millions of its products that are sold every year. By using different materials and designs for the printed components and inner packaging contents, iolo has been able to reduce product package weight by more than 37.5 percent from its previous retail packaging. This results in substantially lowered material waste and reduced carbon footprint.  Additionally, the lighter product increases volume per shipment rate by 65 percent, thus reducing the frequency of shipments, freight cost, and petroleum consumption.

“With more than 23 million users around the world and distribution through more than 18,000 retail storefronts, even the smallest weight reductions add up to a significant decrease in the company’s carbon footprint,” said Ed Ilas, iolo’s COO. “The results of this effort help us reduce our waste and shipping costs, while maintaining a high-quality packaging that the channel has come to recognize and expect from iolo.”

iolo technologies’ green product packaging initiative builds on the company’s established track record of environmentally friendly efforts. Earlier this year iolo’s products became among the first available as electronic downloads from Amazon.com, saving shipping materials and fuel costs. The company also embarked last year on a wide-ranging campaign to educate consumers and businesses about the environmental dangers of prematurely discarding older, but perfectly useable, computers. As part of these green efforts, iolo has been working with non-profit foundations such as L.A. SHARES to lower e-waste quantities by encouraging longer computer lifespans through the use of System Mechanic, as well as enabling secure charitable donations of older computers with DriveScrubber, its secure data removal software.

Recently named one of the Top 50 Best Places to Work in Los Angeles by the Los Angeles Business Journal, the company has also been busy greening its LA headquarters, extending its computers’ lifespan and limiting energy use with System Mechanic; installing energy-efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning, as well as a new tap-water purification system; and focusing on recycling and using biodegradable and recycled products in all its operations. Employees are also provided with ways to reduce waste and emissions with perks such as company-issued reusable water bottles, and free public transportation passes.
