When viewing detailed results on the Configure Windows Startup Programs Programs window, startup items are grouped and categorized.
Startup Folders. The directory located in user profiles that loads programs specific to the settings of the user currently logged on to the PC.
Registry Autorun. Holds process names and paths to load at each Windows startup.
INI Files. Information about file locations, procedures, and miscellaneous data relevant to the internal Windows operating environment startup.
Batch Files. Automated tasks initialized by applications without user interface or intervention.
Internet Explorer. Browser extensions, toolbars, Browser Helper Objects, and menu extensions.
Services. Operating system tools that provide core functionality.
Expert mode also offers the BootExecute and WinLogin groups.
Necessary. Essential for the normal operation of your PC. These files are typically part of security applications, device drivers, or other important system components.
Unnecessary. Not essential to the normal operation of your PC. These files are typically running to provide quick access to various programs but may inadvertently clutter and slow your system. Disabling unnecessary items is recommended.
User Choice. May or may not be essential to the normal operation of your PC, depending on your needs. These files are typically running as part of programs or tasks initiated with or without your explicit approval. Disabling User Choice items is personal preference.
Dangerous. Known security risks that hinder the normal operation of your PC. These files typically account for viruses or any other processes which may cause harm. Disabling dangerous items is highly recommended.
Unknown. The classification and purpose of the startup item cannot be determined by System Mechanic.
Remote. The startup item is for a remote connection.
