Handling Infected Files

When iolo AntiVirus detects an infected file or archive, it handles it in one of four ways:

This topic describes the default actions for infected files and infected archive files, and describes how to change the defaults to suit your preferences.

You can designate different settings for on-demand scanning and real-time protection.

Default Actions for Infected Files

By default, when an infected file is detected:

  1. iolo AntiVirus first attempts to clean the virus from the infected file (Disinfect).

  2. If the file cannot be cleaned, or if the entire file is virus, worm, or Trojan, the backup action is to move it to Quarantine (Quarantine).

  3. To further ensure that infected files are always handled, the third back up action is to delete the file (Delete) and then lastly, rename the file (Rename).

For instruction on changing this default, see Changing Actions/Order of Actions below.

Default Actions for Infected Archive Files

By default, when an infected archive file is detected:

  1. iolo AntiVirus first moves it to Quarantine (Quarantine).

  2. If the file cannot be quarantined, the backup action is to rename it (Rename).

  3. To further ensure that infected files are always handled, the last back up action is to delete the file (Delete).

For instruction on changing this default, see Changing Actions/Order of Actions below.

Changing Actions/Order of Actions

The default actions and order are changed on the Settings window. The settings for real-time protection are on the Real-Time tab and the settings for on-demand scanning (and scheduled scanning) are on the On-Demand tab.

To access the appropriate field:

  1. Open the Settings window. Select either the Real-time or On-Demand tab.

  2. On the selected tab, click Change next to the When an infected file is found field or the When an infected archive is found field.

  3. The window expands to show the list described below.

To change the settings:

The first action you place on the list will be the primary action and it represents how you want infected files/archives to be handled.

Any other remaining actions will act as backup: If the desired action cannot be completed, then iolo AntiVirus will try the second action. If that action cannot be completed, then it will try the third action, and so on.

For example, if you want contaminated files to be cleaned, make Disinfect the first action. In cases where a file may be too damaged to be cleaned, you may wish to delete it. In that case, you would make Delete the second action.

For infected files, you can disinfect, quarantine, rename, or delete. For infected archives, you can quarantine, rename, or delete.

You can elect not to use any backup actions (in other words, you're only using one primary action) or you can use just one or two backup actions.
