From the Individual Tools pane, click Maximize Performance and then click Start next to Defragment and Compact Registry.
Defragmenting and compacting the registry restructures registry entries and removes blocks of unused space.
The registry holds critical settings that are continually accessed by the operating system. With regular usage, the registry becomes overly large and fragmented. Because the registry is loaded into RAM during startup, this bloat unnecessarily eats up vital system memory - your PC's startup processing is overburdened and the overall speed of your computer is slowed.
Defragmenting and compacting work together to free up vital RAM and enable Windows to access and read registry files faster. (Read more about registry optimization.)
Note: Defragmentation and compaction run prior to the computer booting and Windows loading; you will need to restart your computer.
Click Analyze Now to analyze the level of fragmentation in the registry. A progress bar will display during the analysis, which takes approximately 2-3 minutes.
When the analysis completes, results will display. If the registry is fragmented:
A graphical map of the registry will display, indicating the fragmented areas.
Details will show which areas of the registry are fragmented, along with the percentage fragmented.
To schedule the defragmentation and compaction, select the Defragment the registry the next time Windows starts check box. The process will occur the next time you start or restart your computer.
You can restart now (click Restart Now ) or at a later time.
To have System Mechanic automatically defragment and compact the registry when fragmentation is high, enable Automatically repair registry fragmentation problems on the Automated Tasks pane.
