Incinerator: Configure Desktop File Incinerator

To access:

From the Individual Tools pane, click Ensure Personal Privacy and then click Start next to Configure Desktop File Incinerator.

What it does:

The Configure Desktop File Incinerator allows you to install the Incinerator that permanently and securely delete files and folders. Once installed:

Why use it:

A file deleted through Windows is not completely erased; someone using easily available tools can recover it and view its contents. More on why deleting a file doesn't erase it.

 

For confidential data you have deleted, use the Incinerator to completely erase data.

Instructions:

Enable Desktop File Incinerator

To install the feature, click Install Incinerator.

 

Once installed, the Desktop File Incinerator is integrated with Windows. See Using the Desktop File Incinerator for detailed instruction on using the tool in Windows.

 

You can configure various settings for the Incinerator; see below.

Configure Desktop File Incinerator

To configure the Incinerator, click Modify the way Incinerator works. The Incinerator Settings window opens.

Windows menu options

The four check boxes control how the Incinerator is integrated into Windows.

Incineration method

The radio button options allow you to choose an overwrite method. The Incinerator erases data by overwriting it with random characters: the higher the number of overwrites, the higher the security (and the more time the process takes).

 

Choose from one of the following two methods:

View Files within Desktop File Incinerator

To view what items are currently in the Incinerator, click View files within Incinerator. A standard Windows Explorer window opens, displaying the Incinerator's contents.

 

You can also view Incinerator contents through Windows Explorer.

Use Desktop File Incinerator in Windows

The Incinerator works similarly to your Recycle Bin; you can drag files and folders to the Incinerator desktop icon and you can view the Incinerator's contents through Windows Explorer. System Mechanic does not need to be open to use this feature.
