Configure System Shield Settings window

Email tab

Overview of the Settings window

Email protection scans email messages and attachments before you receive or send them. The Email tab allows you turn email protection on or off and change various settings.

Click a field/link name below for instructions; to the right of each field name is a brief description of the functionality.

Enable Email Protection

Turn email protection on or off.

Note: Even if email protection is turned off, real-time protection will still check any attachments as you access them.

The remaining options are available when email protection is enabled:

Use email heuristics

Email heuristics looks for various coding patterns that viruses and spyware commonly use.

This process can stop brand-new infections that are not yet a part of a virus or spyware definition. However, enabling this feature can slow scanning and lead to false positives.

Append scan results to messages

Include or exclude scan results in email messages.

This is a reassurance to you or your mail recipients that messages have been scanned.

Note: This option does not control the Disinfection report that is attached to disinfected email messages. This report will always be created and attached to infected email messages.

Scan incoming and outgoing messages (recommended)

Scan only incoming messages

Specify what email messages to scan: both incoming and outgoing or only incoming.

One of these two options must be selected.

Incoming messages are checked to protect you from infections sent by others. Outgoing messages can be checked to prevent you from unknowingly sending infections to others.

Show advanced settings

Specify port settings and email client executables. These options are provided for advanced users who are familiar with networking and email protocols.

Click the "Show advanced settings" link to display additional options.
