Overview of Repair Broken Shortcuts wizard
The display of the final screen varies depending on what mode you chose. Click a mode below to view instructions.
Automatic mode - Quick or Complete
With the Automatic modes, the wizard processes the removal and/or repair of broken shortcuts. When complete, the results display.
The screen shows the number of items found, removed, and repaired; and shows the amount of drive space freed.
With the Automatic modes, the final screen shows the progress of the removal and/or repair of broken shortcuts.
When complete, the screen shows the number of broken shortcuts found, removed, and repaired; and shows the amount of drive space freed.
With the Custom mode, the broken shortcuts detected will display. You decide which ones you want to repair or remove.
In addition to viewing the file information on the window, the following Tools menu options allow you to view and access information related to each shortcut.
Open folder containing shortcut. Opens a Windows Explorer window, showing the folder that contains the shortcut.
Open folder containing original target. Opens a Windows Explorer window, showing the folder of the original target.
Open folder containing new target. This option is only available if there is a new target. Opens a Windows Explorer window, showing the folder of the new target.
Shortcut properties. Opens a standard Properties window that shows file properties for the shortcut.
New target properties. This option is only available if there is a new target. Opens a standard Properties window that shows file properties for the shortcut.
Note: The Tools > Browse for new target option opens a standard browse window, where you can search for the new target.
You can designate the shortcuts you want to work with in one of several ways:
Click on the one or more rows to select them. You can select multiple files or folders as you normally would in Windows, using the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
Select the one or more check boxes next to each item.
Make one of the following selections from the Tools menu:
Select all. Selects all rows.
Inverse selection. Where a row is selected , this option clears them; and where a row is not selected, this option selects them.
Check all. Selects all check boxes.
Inverse checked states. Where a check box is selected, this option clears them; and where a check box is cleared, this option selects them.
For a single selection, you can click the Options link and then click Remove shortcut.
With the desired items selected or checked, click one of the below Repair menu options:
Repair selected. Repairs all selected shortcuts.
Repair checked. Repairs all checked shortcuts.
Repair all. Repairs all shortcuts.
Removal method. From the Repair menu, click Removal method and then select one of the options:
Delete. Delete the shortcuts. (Shortcuts will not be in the Recycle Bin.)
Move to Recycle Bin. Send the shortcuts to the Windows Recycle Bin.
Move to Incinerator. Send the shortcuts to the Desktop File Incinerator.
Incinerate Immediately. Permanently delete the shortcuts using the Desktop File Incinerator (it cannot be recovered).
Note: You can right-click on a row for quick access to selected Repair and Tools menu options. Click to view a list of the right-click menu options:
Repair selected. Repairs the current row.
Browse for new target. Opens a standard browse window, where you can search for the new target.

Open folder containing original target. Opens a Windows Explorer window, showing the folder of the original target.
Open folder containing new target. This option is only available if there is a new target. Opens a Windows Explorer window, showing the folder of the new target.
Select all. Highlights all rows.
Inverse selection. Where a row is selected , this option clears them; and where a row is not selected, this option select them.
Check all. Selects all check boxes.
Inverse checked states. Where a check box is selected, this option clears them; and where a check box is cleared, this option select them.

New target properties. This option is only available if there is a new target. Opens a standard Properties window that shows file properties for the shortcut.
When you are finished, if you used one of the Automatic modes, you can click New search to return to the first screen of the Repair Broken Shortcuts wizard.
In any mode, you can exit in one of two ways:
Click Exit on the bottom of the screen to return to the Home page.
Click the Close icon (X) at the top of the screen to close System Mechanic.
