Overview of Configure Boot-Time Defragmentation window

On the Custom tab, you can designate the files that you want to be defragmented at boot-time.

To designate Windows system files for defragmentation, use the System Files tab.

Add a file

  1. Click Add file(s). The Add Boot-time Defrag Item window opens.

  2. Click Browse to open a standard Browse window. You can select multiple files as you normally do in Windows, using the CTRL and SHIFT keys. Navigate to the desired file and click OK.

  3. Repeat step 2 for every file you want to add. If you change your mind about adding a file, select it and click Remove.

  1. To set the frequency of the defragmentation, select one or more files, click Options, and then select one of these two options from the menu:

  2. Defrag selected at each restart. The selected file or files will be defragmented every time you start or restart your computer. This option is recommended for frequently used files.

  3. Defrag selected on next restart only. The selected file or files will be defragmented the next time your start or restart your computer. This sets up the boot-time defragmentation for one use.

Note: You can select multiple files as you normally do in Windows using the CTRL and SHIFT keys.

  1. When you are finished making your selections, click OK to close the Add Boot-time Defrag Item window.

Note: The final screen of the Defragment Hard Drives wizard also allows you to designate files for boot-time defragmentation. If you added any files through that wizard, they will display here and will be defragmented at boot-time once. You can change settings for these files as described below.
