The Scan for Viruses and Spyware window runs the scans for computer infections, and then shows the results. You can run one of the following scans depending on your needs:
Scan the Entire System for Malware: Scan your whole computer, including memory, boot records, and all files and folders.
Scan a Specific Folder for Malware: Scan a single folder you select.
Scan a Specific File for Malware: Scan a single file you select.
This topic describes the fields that display on the window and the actions available to you.
The left side of the window provides a running count of the files checked and the number of infections, if any, that are detected.
Items Scanned. The number of files scanned.
Infected Files. The number of infected files found.
For every infected file, System Shield takes some action (depending on how on-demand scanning is configured.). The following fields show the number of files that have been handled in a certain way:
Files Quarantined. The number of files quarantined. (More on quarantines.)
Files Deleted. The number of files deleted.
Files Renamed. The number of files renamed. These files are renamed to end in INFECTED, so that the file name doesn't end with an executable extension.
When the scan is complete, if:
No infections are found, a confirmation message will display, informing you that no infections were found.
Infections are found, the following information about the infections will display on the right side of the window:
File. The location and filename of the infected file.
Infection. The infection name. Click the name to open a page that provides additional information on the infection.
Type. The type of infection, such as virus or Trojan.
Result. Shows the action that System Shield took with the file. One of the following displays:
Quarantined: The file has been quarantined.
Deleted. The file has been deleted.
Renamed. The file was renamed to end in INFECTED. It remains in the same folder.
To stop the scanning before it completes, click Stop Scan.
Note: When System Shield is initially scanning the boot records and memory, the Stop Scan button will not display. Wait a few moments and when the button is enabled, you can click it to stop the scanning.
To configure settings for what on-demand scanning does or does not include in scanning, open the Configure System Shield Settings window and select the On-demand tab.
