Cyber criminals have repurposed some of the recently released NSA hacking tools as a “ransomware” hack, delivered via email as a zip file usually disguised as an invoice, voice mail, or other document. If you click the email without even opening the attachment, the threat automatically replicates and can take over a whole network of computers using the SMBV1 protocol vulnerability in Windows computers that lack a recent update. Files on infected computers become unusable until the victim pays a ransom to the attackers to decrypt them.
In addition to closing the security vulnerability by applying the latest updates, please just delete any emails with attachments from senders you do not recognize.
