DriveScrubber Quick Start Guide

DriveScrubber hard drive wiping technology permanently erases sensitive data when selling, donating or recycling a computer or hard drive.

Even after you’ve deleted them or reformatted a drive, identity thieves can still access pictures, bank statements, emails, credit card numbers and more.

Built to satisfy the strict protocols of government and military entities, DriveScrubber meets the U.S. Department of Defense 5220.22-M disk-sanitizing standard, ensuring that your private files will never be recovered.

System Requirements

  • PC with Windows® 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista, or XP (SP3)
  • 10 MB of available hard disk space
  • Minimum 512 MB RAM (optimal 2 GB)

Troubleshooting Licensing and Installation

If you have any difficulties with licensing or installation:

  1. Double-check the values you entered for the Activation Key, making sure that no spaces are entered and that all letters and numbers are entered exactly as shown.
  2. Some characters in the Activation Key (such as the number 0 and the letter O) can look very similar. Try double-checking the following: the letters O, l (lower-case L), I (capital i); and the numbers 0 (zero) and 1 (one).
  3. Make sure you are entering license information for the specific product you are installing. License information for one iolo product is not interchangeable with another iolo product.

Whole Home License®

Under the terms of iolo’s Whole Home License, you may install DriveScrubber on every PC in a single-family household for personal, non-commercial use only. For full terms and conditions, please see our User License Agreement.

Getting Started

Wipe system drive using the DriveScrubber Installation CD
Your installation CD is also a boot disk, with a DOS-based program that can erase all system drive contents, including the operating system. Note that this method may not work on newer computers.

  1. Place the DriveScrubber boot disk CD in your CD/DVD drive.
  2. Start or restart your computer.
  3. Initializing information displays and then the DriveScrubber drive wiping program will open.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to wipe all the contents of selected drives. You will be allowed to make selections and confirmations prior to the actual wipe beginning.

Wipe system drive using a bootable CD
You may create additional boot disks using DriveScrubber, which provide a DOS-based program to erase all system drive contents, including the operating system. Note that this method may not work on newer computers. If the CD option does not work, please use the USB method shown in the next section of this guide.

  1. Insert a blank writable CD (CD-RW) into your PC. Make sure that the CD does not contain any important data, as this will be overwritten by DriveScrubber to create the boot disk.
  2. On the DriveScrubber homepage, click Create DriveScrubber boot disk.
  3. Select the CD-ROM boot disk type and click Next.
  4. Select your CD/DVD drive from the dropdown list (note that you must have a CD/DVD drive capable of burning CDs to do so). Once you have selected the appropriate drive, click Next.
  5. DriveScrubber will now format your CD and create the boot disk. Please note that this process may take 10-15 minutes to complete.
  6. Once the process is complete, you may use this CD to wipe your system drive, or you may use it on another computer. Follow the instructions at the top of the previous page to proceed, but use the CD you just created instead of your installation CD.

Wipe system drive using a bootable USB
You may create a boot disk USB using DriveScrubber, which provides a Linux-based program to erase all system drive contents, including the operating system. It is recommended to use this method for the best experience, especially with newer computers.

  1. Insert a blank USB drive into your PC. Make sure that the USB does not contain any important data, as this will be overwritten by DriveScrubber to create the boot disk.
  2. On the DriveScrubber homepage, click Create DriveScrubber boot disk.
  3. Select the USB boot disk type and click Next.
  4. Select your USB drive name from the dropdown list, then click Next.
  5. DriveScrubber will now format your USB and create the boot disk. Please note that this process may take 10-15 minutes to complete.
  6. Once the process is complete, you may use this USB to wipe your system drive, or you may use it on another computer. Follow the instructions at the top of the previous page to proceed, but use the USB you just created instead of your installation CD.

  • You, your spouse, and your relatives living within the same household may use the same license on any number of PCs that you own which are not used for business.
