How to Make an Unhackable Password

A password is a confidential phrase or set of characters that is used to gain access to a website account, device, or online service and it’s essential to create a strong and unhackable password to enhance your security. Most of the time, passwords are used in pairing with an email address or a username.  Passwords are specifically designed only to be known by the maker.

Ideally, passwords should be over 12 characters long and showcase a combination of numbers, symbols, lowercase letters, and uppercase letters.

Strong passwords are essential because they help to stop unauthorized access to personal data. This is especially critical for accounts containing sensitive and personal information, such as finances or social media accounts.

How Do You Make A Password?

Whilst strong passwords are essential, a password that you are unable to memorize is useless.  On the other hand, a password that is too simple can make an easily guessed password which you need to avoid.

Strong Password Example: P#L82s@up&T

This is a good example of a strong password because it is difficult for someone else to guess, and contains a variety of different characters.

The key features of a strong password are length, a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. It is good to try and avoid dictionary words.  It is shocking that over 50% of people use the same password for their work and personal accounts. In addition, the password 123456 is used by around 23 million account holders. This shows how many people are unaware of the dangers of a weak password.

With online security in mind, having an unhackable password needs to be your top priority. Weak passwords are a huge risk of being hacked. An unhackable password will stop any nefarious person from accessing your personal information or bank account.

Why Create An Unhackable Password?

Hackers’ aims are usually to obtain money or identity. Hackers manage to steal passwords using a range of methods which include data breaches, password guessing, physical theft, and malware. If they do manage to hack your password it can have serious consequences.

Phishing is a very common method that hackers use to gain access to passwords. Phishing emails may contain links that lead to fake websites designed to trick the user into entering their password which is then shared with the hacker

Hackers usually target financial institutions because of the opportunity to gain access to personal financial information. On top of this, they might try to gain access to accounts like credit cards or investment portfolios. In 2021, unauthorized access was responsible for over 40% of data breaches.

In 2022, around 24 billion passwords were obtained by hackers. Over 80% of confirmed breaches were related to stolen, weak, or reused passwords. This shows the importance of not reusing your passwords over and over again. If you’re using the same password across email, social media accounts, and other websites then you are more likely to be the target of a hacker.
